SINGAPORE HETEROTOPIA

Alternative world where there is no constraints

This is a place where it is an alternative world. While the city has constraints, this place allows people to have freedom in doing activities. It is called “Heterotopia” which there is a disconnection to the reality.  People are coming to this place for different reasons such as relaxing, escaping from the pressure from the city, or they are appreciating the nature.

Singapore Heterotopia

1

Manufactured Identity

The diagram illustrates how Singapore portraits itself from garden city to eco-smart city. The reason why many countries see Singapore as the role model

2

Future Scenario

According to the research of manufactured identity, Singapore propose the propaganda that seems to present only positive factors. However, there are negative factors behind  those propaganda. Not everybody likes how Singapore presents itself.

For example, Singapore is one of the safest country in the world, although the reason of this result is the harsh punishment that presses on people

3

Proposed Instance

An alternative space of freedom. I proposed the new place where it overcomes these perceptions. A place where the constraints and the anxieties of urban life would not exist.

4

The island of little-freedom

The site is located at Pulau Ubin which is the island between Singapore and Malaysia. The shape comes from the idea of distorted spiral continue from the ground to the upper level to create different atmosphere. The platform allows people to do activities that are not allowed in the main city.

5

Construction

The platform is made by wood which is held by the cable structure. Underneath the wood platform is the pipe to allow water to flow easily. The platform is supported by I-beams. There are also water tanks to collect rain water for people who camping here.
