PEAT FIRE

Forest fires or wildfires are seasonal phenomena that occur around the world. They can spread freely without boundaries and out of control destroying natural resources and causing many negative consequences. Forest fires might seem “harmless” to those who live far away; however, they have devastating effects.

In 2015, Indonesia faced massive peat fires across Borneo and Sumatra creating massive air pollution not only in Indonesia but neighbouring countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and even in the south of Thailand. Fires occurred on all types of soils throughout Borneo, but fires on peatlands were particularly concerned because they released up to 90% of the haze; releasing a large amount of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Many attempts have been explored to prevent peat fires; however, peat fires are very notable in difficulty to extinguish
